Sustainability

Marley and Moose commitment to supporting sustainability. Plastic waste is a problem, and the toy industry is a major contributor.

Reducing Single Use Plastic

As our oceans fill with plastic trash there has been a focus across many industries on reducing our carbon footprint, reducing the usage of single use plastic, and reducing the usage of plastic and other "forever materials" in general.  The toy industry, sadly, is lagging.  While we do focus on the educational and developmental benefits of the toys we sell, as part of our identity of being inspired by child development, nature, and culture, we also focus on being an environmentally responsible company.

Finding Sustainable Partners

Relationships

At Marley & Moose, we seek partners who align with our values, prioritizing true sustainability. We thoroughly examine each brand’s supply chain, ensuring their commitment goes beyond words. Even Lego, known for its iconic toys, is moving towards sugarcane-based plastics by 2032 and has begun using more sustainable packaging.

We prioritize FSC-certified wooden toys and GOTS organic fabrics. We minimize plastic use, opting for items made from 100% recycled or ocean bound plastics, like GreenToys, or alternatives like sugarcane-based plastic from Lego. FSC certification requires companies to follow 10 principles of forest management, including maintaining and restoring ecosystem services, conserving high conservation value areas, and having a management plan for economic, environmental, and social objectives. Brands like PlanToys use recycled rubberwood and upcyle leftover sawdust.

In addition to ethical manufacturing practices by partnering with only WRAP-certified partners, Keep Nature Wild has committed to picking up 1,000,000 pounds of trash via cleanup programs nationwide.  Another example is Trek Light who use 100% recycled clothing material on traditional wooden looms by Indigenous Mexican artisans.

Long Term Goal

Becoming Carbon Neutral

Supply Chain
We prioritize brands that aim for carbon neutrality across their supply chains. While challenging for smaller brands, companies like Osprey and PlanToys have the resources to manage their carbon footprint, including transportation and energy use.

Packaging
As new business owners, we learned a lot when our first shipment arrived overly packaged in plastic. We quickly realized we could do better. Since then, we've focused on improving partnerships, aiming for products that are sustainably sourced throughout their entire lifecycle.

Shipping - Eco-Enclose
All our products are shipped in 100% recycled packaging from our local partner, EcoEnclose. They aim for a future where packaging is continuously recycled. By partnering with them, we avoid additional shipping and packaging waste by picking it up directly.

Carbon Neutral
One of our near term goals is to continuously work towards carbon neutrality and zero waste.  Doing better is a journey and we will always work towards the destination.
